Annie's Bait & Tackle
4334 127th St. W., Cortez; 941-794-3580;anniesbaitandtackle.com
Located on the Intracoastal Waterway across from Anna Maria Island in the fishing village of Cortez, this Old Florida gem has a history as a bait shop dating back to the 1950s. From serving food at a few indoor tables to the cozy beer and wine bar, and my favorite spot, the covered terrace by the sea.
Annie's is probably most famous in the Sarasota-Bradenton area for its fried grouper sandwiches (which I love), but it also offers an equally impressive burger and fries for about $13. condiment you'll want to order "all the way" with crisp iceberg lettuce, juicy tomato and garlic with a dollop of mayonnaise.— Wade Tatangelo, Sarasota Herald-Tribune

BurgerRobs
3486 S. Hopkins Ave., Titusville,burgerrobshq.com
BurgerRobsit was plan B for Shelby and Rob Buffaloe after they lost their marketing jobs in the hospitality industry during the pandemic. They started their smashburger food truck in January 2021 with little more than a tent and a 36-inch griddle. As of January 2022, the truck has been drawing crowds and often selling out for burgers. The couple also started renovations on a brick-and-mortar space. The buzz is not dead. They welcomed 2023 by expanding their dining room.
You can't go wrong with the classic cheeseburger, but if you're feeling adventurous, try the Spuds Burger with American cheese and spicy potato sticks, or the Mexican Streetcorn Burger with grilled corn, cotija cheese, cowboy sauce, pickled jalapenos and chopped cilantro. Can't make it to Titusville? BurgerRob's food truck still makes regular stops on the Space Coast. —Suzy Fleming Leonard, FLORIDA I DAG

Pub Messing Ring
200 U.S. Hwy 1, North Palm Beach, 561-848-4748,BrassRingPubFl.com
Follow the smoky aroma of beef on the grill to this family-friendly neighborhood favorite and you'll be rewarded with a pound.hamburgersthat are as simple as they are delicious. The secret ingredient? It's not spices or sauce, but quality meat cooked over the lava stone on a charcoal grill.
I prefer my burgers on the not too fancy side. I order the Brass Ring cheeseburger cooked to a juicy pink medium and topped with American cheese, tomato, pickles and a little mayo. You can customize that burger with bacon or mushrooms for 95 cents. But I think the smoke on the burger stands out in itself. On a side note, I love the crispy fries and the cold draft beer, served the old fashioned way, in a cold mug. —Liz Balmaseda, The Palm Beach Post

Launched as Cackylacky's food truck in 2016, Carolina Jax — which opened as a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Riverside four years later — has won national recognition along with multiple awards for its custom-made Certified Angus beef burgers. These burgers include the Mountain Man, made with baked poblano mayo, cheese sauce, bell peppers, grilled onions and jalapeno on a toasted brioche bun; the tar heel. made with roasted poblano mayo, golden sauce, spicy cheddar, applewood-smoked bacon, pulled pork, onion ring; and the Charleston, made with baby arugula, pimento cheese, bourbon bacon jam, fried egg and sriracha curry ketchup. But our favorite is the Riverside, topped with goat cheese, bacon, lime and date aioli, orange marmalade, baby spinach and a drizzle of date sauce.
The restaurant also serves state-of-the-art hot dogs, innovative sandwiches, onion rings and loaded fries, like the Ol' Dirt Road, made with cheese sauce, chili peppers, Cajun ranch, smoked bacon and jalapeno. —Tom Szaroleta, Florida Times-Union

Slot 13
535 Rua 13 W., Bradenton; 941-226-0110;chateau-13.com
Bradenton's most acclaimed restaurant, Château 13, was ranked No. 40 in theYelp's second annual list of Florida's 100 Best Restaurants, published at the end of March, moved up one place from last year.Located just south ofRiverwalkand crowds on Old Main Street, Château 13 brings sophisticated Western European-inspired cuisine to The Friendly City in a modern, romantic setting that includes a main dining area, wine and beer bar and sidewalk seating.
As well as serving excellent starters like mussels and fries and expertly prepared duck, pork, steak and fresh fish, the Château serves a positively decadent burger that shares its name with a French king and cognac. The Louis XIII features a succulent slice of meat topped with truffle mushrooms, shallot marmalade, a generous slice of gruyère and, for an extra fabulous touch, foie gras. It costs $29 and comes with the restaurant's famous fries and asparagus. Consider pairing the burger with the Château's delicious Champagne cocktail or perhaps a local craft beer from nearby Motorworks Brewing.— Wade Tatangelo, Sarasota Herald-Tribune

DJ's cast iron burgers
1542 West University Ave., Gainesville; 352-258-7280;toasttab.com/djscastironburgers
This popular food truck can usually be found in the vacant lot across from the UF West Library, although it's best to checkFacebookbefore you take the trip. The fritters are extremely thin (DJ'S recommends ordering a double) and, as the name suggests, are cooked on cast iron planks, resulting in a fantastic outer crust and a juicy interior.
Among DJ's most popular items is the Oklahoma Onion Burger, which includes a double patty, grilled onions, DJ sauce and bread-and-butter pickles. Don't let the truck's location deter you from visiting. Customers can park for free for up to 45 minutes.—Alan Festo, The Gainesville Sun

Originating in Fort Myers about a decade ago, ford garageit is now headquartered in Tampa and with locations throughout Florida (and the United States). The restaurant boasts a roster of stellar burgers to match its stunning construction that honors Henry Ford and his revolutionary Model T car.
There are a dozen "Burgers of Fame" with a "half pound of hand breaded, never frozen Black Angus beef" that always hits the spot, with my current favorite being the Estate Burger ($16.99). It's smoked gouda, sweet red onion marmalade, arugula, tomatoes, fried onion stalks and "white truffle" bacon aioli on a brioche bun named after the restaurant. Yep, all that sweet and savory jam and aioli tends to get a little messy. But believe me, it's worth it.— Wade Tatangelo, Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Just beach burgers

What's better than a food truck? A BOAT BURGER! This was a secret to the local sailors from south of Naples untilfood networkgot famous. Three varieties of cheeseburgers are on the daily menu, but their island burger is my top pick: piled high and served hot to the touch from the grill.

With so many options, this Cape Coral joint makes me feel like a kid in a candy store with its Design Your Own Burger. First, you choose a single, double or triple Angus beef and how you want it cooked—from rare to dead. Next comes a choice of bread (or in a mixed salad) and 10 types of cheese, then extra cheese, greens, sauces and 19 toppings.—from fricassee to sauerkraut. Choosing one of each seems easier than choosing a few.
I pick a few toppings (usually a fried egg and turkey bacon), then one (hello pulled pork!) and another (grilled pineapple, maybe?), and only stop when it gets too embarrassing.— Robyn George, The News-Press

Run through Mac

A Gainesville staple since 1987, Mac's serves a relatively simple menu of made-to-order burgers and other hand-held dishes, including grilled ham and cheese, chicken and fish. The fast food style burger is the star though.
It's not uncommon to see lines at Mac's stretch out onto the street, snarling traffic in both directions. Place your order through your signature orange speakers. The patties are small, so I suggest a Mac's Way topped double cheeseburger, which comes with lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo.—Alan Festo, The Gainesville Sun

Tucked away in a mall less than five miles fromworld famous Siesta Beachand with a delightfully charming English pub setting that reflects owners Marilyn and Dick Neal's Essex roots, Shakespeare's has long been one of my favorite beer and burger destinations.for almost 19 years. All burgers are made with eight ounces of pure ground Black Angus beef and, on each of my visits, cooked to perfection: the medium I ordered this month arrived with a hint of pink, juicy interior wrapped in an expertly seasoned black coal.
Now Shakespeare offers about a dozen specialty burgers, all served on toasted rosemary Kaiser buns that are among the best burgers I've ever encountered. But probably the most famous burger in all of Sarasota-Manatee, and the one I think about far too often, is still Marilyn's creation topped with two slices of buttery brie and a bed of caramelized balsamic sweet onions that I could eat out of a bowl ( $15.75).— Wade Tatangelo, Sarasota Herald-Tribune
