What is a double-sided stove?
Well, as the name implies, a double-sided stove is simply a stove with two fronts (they are sometimes called "double-sided stoves").
This means that you effectively have two openings for the stove. This has a number of benefits, such as:
- Being able to heat two rooms simultaneously (if the fireplace is placed in an adjoining chimney or if it is recessed in an adjoining wall).
- Double the fantastic views of the stove fire.
- Heat output from two sides of the stove instead of one.
Due to these benefits, double-sided stoves are the ideal option for heating large spaces. Here at Direct Stoves, we have customers who have installed double-sided stoves as focal points in the center of a large open room. Others decided to install a single-deep stove in a new fireplace and turn two rooms into one.
In short, if you're creating a larger room within your home, a double-sided stove could be the perfect heating option to go along with the new, larger, more open space.

What is the difference between double-sided and single-deep stoves?
When looking for double-sided stoves, you will generally see them divided into two distinct categories:
- Single depth.
- Double depth.
So what's the difference?
Double-sided, single-depth stoves
As the name suggests, single-deep double-sided cooktops are more compact than their double-deep brethren. They are designed to sit in smaller spaces, such as inside fireplace cavities. Choose a single depth stove if you don't want your stove to dominate your room.
Double sided double bottom stoves
If you want your stove to be the focal point of your room, or if you are going to place it in a very large space, choose a double-sided, deep stove. As you might have guessed, double depth stoves are much deeper than single depth stoves; therefore, they are ideal if you are trying to heat two rooms separated by a very thick wall or an adjacent fireplace.
To give you an idea of the difference between single and double stoves, let's compare two examples.

Thus, the difference in size between the two types of stoves can be considerable. Keep this in mind when selecting your double-sided stove and thinking about where you will place it in your home.

Where can you place a double-sided stove in your home?
So far, we've talked about all the exciting possibilities that double-sided stoves can open up in terms of your home's design. However, where exactly can you place them? They are certainly very different from traditional fires that require a full chimney.
We are often asked if a double-sided stove can be placed in the center of a room. The answer is a resounding yes'. However, you will need to ensure that you have a suitable fireplace and chimney, and you will need to comply with building regulations and have the work approved by your local authority once it is complete.
We strongly recommend that you use a qualified HETAS installer to install your range.

What fuels can double-sided stoves use?
This is another question we receive a lot here at Direct Fogões. Just like regular stoves, you can buy double-sided stoves that use a variety of different types of fuel. At Direct Stoves we predominantly stock double sided wood burning stoves as they are by far the most popular option.
However, you can also buy double-sided stoves that are classified as "multi-fuel", meaning they can burn charcoal or wood. Look hard and you'll also find double-sided gas stoves on the market.
Can you buy double-sided built-in stoves?
Yes! It's becoming more and more popular to insert or "built-in" fireplaces into walls, so stove manufacturers are introducing double-sided built-in stoves (sometimes called wall stoves or wall furnaces).
This means that if you have a wall in the center of a large room, or want to embed a double-sided stove in an adjacent wall to heat two rooms, you now have the option to do so.
